week 32

The ideas of the participating artists are getting more settled. First steps to organize or construct the coming projects have been taken. Most of us found an interesting topic / location to focus on.

Wouter and Elke,

After collecting a lot of photographs of all sorts of houseboat areas and other alternative residential areas, we started working on the project: "My Home is your castle". In this work we try to make a houseboat in the style of the ones we've seen during the first week. As shown in the pictures of last week you can see the diversity of the architectural forms. During the first weeks we created an interest in all these different shapes and strange locations. We now have a collection of alternative housing resorts.

Our houseboat will eventually be an information centre for the residents in a newly build area in the Norwest part of Groningen. In this information centre we will show alternative possibilities of housing, in contrast with the housing facilities in a vinex location. We'll place the houseboat within a small lake surrounded by new houses. We'll invite the inhabitants to come to our houseboat and show them some strange and odd residential buildings of Groningen.

We don't want to protest against these vinex locations, it's just that we think that the diversity of alternative housing resorts will make a city more vivid and lively. In Groningen a lot of these more alternative area's are threaded. The city government needs control over these non visible areas and they're making plans to integrate these areas within newly planned city structures. We've seen some of these new designed places, where some time ago people were living in trailers and self-made home's, nowadays these places have become a part of the clearly defined vinex location. In a way we think this is a bit of a shame, because you lose a kind of freedom.

Jean Baptiste,

End of the photoshop models, several projects on the way... pieces had to be realized.

This week I planned to realize some of the projects and work out a collaboration of Christoph and me in
a burned house (picture) what we try to realize at the end of the residence period, we want to try to do something with sound... or light.

Professional work on a sunday morning...

Birgit,

For a dance evening people shall be invited to come
and take part in, the dancing will be exposed to a
wall where then a photograph remains. Seconds of
dancing are displayed in this image in public space -
see test pictures.
I found a suitable wall in a neighbourhood area that
appears quiet, still, idyllic. Movements of the event
shown in the photogram (that reminded Wouter on
primitive cave paintings)are set in contrast to this
stillness. I prepared people want to dance the walz...

Petra,

Going up up up!

Christoph,

After more than a week of watching and wandering through the city I got the feeling of getting the feet on the ground. I found it very inspiring, to share time with the others and to explore with them. Especially with Jean Baptiste I made many trips through the city.

This week I had to find and follow just my own instinct and go by myself.

Finding a burnt house, I knew this place would be interesting for Jean Baptiste too. We decided to do a project there together. We climbed it today, to check out the location and be able to make our ideas more clear.

My other way - going isolated by myself - led to the place of the dead.
How do people design the graves of their friends and family? Why do they use some symbols I haven´t seen in other Parts of Europe. Like Dolphins. Like Butterflies. What do they mean to them?
What are the reasons of creating a site for a dead person, even if he or she is burnt?

There is a teahouse in the middle of the selwerder cemetary. I very much respect this idea. And was so happy to be able to met four people within two hours who talked with me. No just but also about graves, death and how they deal with it. I loved to listen. and hope to be able to make interviews with them to work with these voices and their ideas.

My impulse from the very beginning kept on coming back. I will work with used clothes. Building a living room within a container out of it.

There is more in my mind, but that needs time to work, before I can write about it.

shift what has become designed and predictable.
