Dancing Picture

Bringing movements into public space of a quiet neighborhood area is the idea of Dancing Picture. People are invited to dance, this will be exposed directly to a wall that is prepared with light emulsion where then a photograph remains. In this performance the dancers play the leading role, the way they are going to move and enjoy the evening at the corner of Oosterweg / Polderstraat where the wall is located will be displayed in an image there. A container acts as dark and dancing room. Intentionally focusing the people that create their own image will be painted with short light spots.

“Sign to Eutopia” is initiated by Wouter Osterholt and Elke Uitentuis and organized in collaboration with “Sign” and “Eutopia”, an Association for the Advancement of European Art and Culture.

The artists who are going to participate:

Birgit Graschopf (Austria)

Petra Kleyn (the Netherlands)

Christoph Mayer chm. (Austria)

Wouter Osterholt (the Netherlands)

Eric von Robertson (USA)

Jean Baptiste Sauvage (French)

Adrien Tirtiaux (Belgium)

Elke Uitentuis (the Netherlands)

These 8 artists will work in the city of Groningen for a period of five weeks. The research is based on a desire to maximalize the open attitude of the citizens of Groningen towards the experience of parts of the citystructure. The artists are going to explore the possibilities of redefining people’s attitude towards the city by using functional elements, such as lampposts, fences, maps, signs, alleys etc., in different perspectives.

The Netherlands is a very organized country. Everything is defined. This fact influences a lot the physical appearance of the Dutch landscape. A lot of people from the Netherlands don’t even know how much this planning regulates their behaviour. Inspired by this cultural phenomenon the group of international artists are going to investigate the Dutch cityplanning. The exchange between the artists can lead to a bigger understanding of the value of the Dutch environment and of the influence of cityplanning in general.

The gallery space of Sign is completely transformed into a living space. There're 7 sleeping cabins, computer room, shower, kitchen and a meetingplace. The artists are going to stay here during the residency. The public space of Groningen will be used as their workspace and as their context. During the residency there are different artprojects presented on different locations in the city of Groningen. Check this webiste for the different locations and dates of the artprojects in public space. This information can also be found at the display in front of the window of Sign. After the residency the documentation will be presented within the setting of the former living space.
